A Bit About Bees

Why Bees Matter

Bees are essential to life — not just for their beauty or their buzz, but because one in every three bites of food we eat relies on them.

The UK is home to over 250 species of bee, including bumblebees, honeybees, and hundreds of solitary bees. These incredible pollinators help grow apples, strawberries, courgettes, tomatoes, raspberries, and countless other crops.

But they’re in serious trouble and are declining fast.

🚨 A Silent Decline

Supporting bees has never been more important. Across the UK, wild bee populations are declining at an alarming rate.

  • A third of pollinator species have dropped in number since 1980
  • 17 species have already disappeared from parts of the country
  • Nearly a quarter of Europe’s bumblebee species face extinction

What’s causing this?

  • Loss of wild habitats
  • Fragmented green spaces
  • Climate change and unpredictable weather
  • Pesticides and pollution

How You Can Help

🌼Plant Wildflowers or Let Your Park/Garden Grow

Even a small patch of native wildflowers makes a big difference. Create natural feeding spaces for bees from spring through to autumn.

🧪Avoid Chemical Weedkillers & Pesticides

Many products labelled “bee friendly” can still harm pollinators. Use natural methods or hand-weed where possible.
